Joseph Phillips joins the Ballet Academy of Charleston as Artistic Director

World-renowned dancer and Columbia, SC native Joseph Phillips joins The Ballet Academy of Charleston as Artistic Director on January 4, 2021.

Joseph Phillips, one of the world’s most decorated male ballet dancers, returns to his South Carolina roots after dancing with the San Francisco Ballet, Miami City Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, Mariinsky Theater and, more recently, Ballet Manila in the Philippines.

The release of the trending video “Swans for Relief” (a fundraiser for dancers during the pandemic) with Misty Copeland made Joseph Phillips a household name even among non-dancers.

As Artistic Director, Phillips will add pre-professional and professional classes to the Ballet Academy of Charleston’s current schedule and offer weekly masterclasses (via Zoom and in-person) by international ballet capabilities. Its vision is to create an annual professional performance with dancers from all over the world.

The Ballet Academy of Charleston will continue to cater to recreational and aspiring professional dancers and will also retain its current teachers on the faculty.

Current director and owner, Corina Fimian looks forward to seeing a new chapter for the Ballet Academy of Charleston and looks forward to working with Phillips.

“Joseph and I will work closely together to ensure a smooth transition into leadership,” says Fimian, who has run the school for 13 years.
